Communications Operators

As well as being very satisfying in terms of helping the public, the role of Communications Operator comes with plenty of other benefits too.

All of our Communications Operator roles involve shift work – something we appreciate doesn't always suit everyone. However, we do have a Work/Life Balance scheme which provides flexibility whilst maintaining our operational commitments. A typical example of a standard five-week shift pattern may look like this:

  • Earlies: 7am – 4pm
  • Lates: 12noon – 10pm; 4pm – 2am
  • Nights: 10pm – 7am
  • Three weekends out of five are worked, and can include nights, lates and early turns on a rotational basis
  • Training day: 8am – 4pm once every 10 week rotation

As you grow in your role, so too will the amount you're paid. If you're working the full Herts 99 shift pattern, you'll earn a starting salary of £17,259, plus nine additional spinal column points for shift of £5,208 and a fringe allowance of £711, all together totalling £23,178.

Then, within the first 12 months with us (and upon successful completion of your Personal Development Portfolio), this amount will increase to £18,648, plus nine additional spinal column points for shift of £6,162 and a fringe allowance of £711, all together totalling £25,521.

As part of the team, you’ll be eligible to join a contributory final salary pension scheme. We'll also offer you 23 days’ annual leave that increases to 32, depending on your grade and length of service. But that’s far from all.

We also offer flexible working hours and, if you have young children, our childcare voucher scheme will enable you to make savings. What's more, if you're a UNISON member, you'll receive preferential travel insurance, access to a healthcare scheme that allows you to claim expenses connected to eye exams, glasses and even hospital stays. You can also obtain these benefits for your dependants. Mortgage advice will also be available as will assistance with wills and discounts on cars, insurance, holidays and plenty of other products.

Finally, the opportunity for career progression is great. In time, you can expect to move up the ranks to a Team Leader role, and potentially be accelerated to complete a Core Leadership and Development course (NVQ equivalent).
